Who are we?
Epilepsy South Africa promotes the human rights of persons living with Epilepsy and is dedicated to rendering a holistic service to them. The Gauteng Branch accommodates an inclusive society for persons with disabilities, primarily those with epilepsy.
Epilepsy SA was established in 1967 as the South African National Epilepsy League (SANEL). We
are the only national organisation in South Africa offering specialised and comprehensive services
to persons with and affected by epilepsy and other disabilities. Our aim is to enhance and improve
the quality of life of our target group.

"Igniting the Flame of Potential" is a phrase we use to represent our mission. The flame is a powerful symbol embraced by many organizations, including the International Bureau for Epilepsy, to dispel misconceptions about epilepsy and bring it into the light. It symbolizes warmth, light, and hope. You will also find a flame in Epilepsy South Africa's logo, signifying our commitment to making a positive impact in the epilepsy community.
More about what we do.
25 % of people with Epilepsy, other neurological conditions, and intellectual disabilities will not be able to function independently in mainstream society. They need specialized care that includes 24-hour nursing, accommodation and nutrition, protective work, psycho-social treatment, family support, and evidence-based life skills programs through group work. These programs are aimed at increasing self-esteem, resilience, and independence and preventing homelessness, poverty, substance abuse, HIV, and exploitation, amongst others, gender-based violence (GBV). This is in line with DSD’s new priorities in Gauteng. Studies in other parts of the world have shown that deinstitutionalization actually increases homelessness, substance abuse, and GBV.

Our Skills Development and Protective Workshop is for people with epilepsy and multi-disabilities who are cared for by their families in the community and are unable to work in the open market. The protective workshops in East Rand and Johannesburg, give people that fall in this category a purpose. They have the opportunity to work in a safe and encouraging environment. They also receive psycho-social support and prevention programs and a nutritious meal every day. The prevention program also focuses on substance abuse, GBV, HIV, and other essential life skills to promote independence and resilience. Without this program, our beneficiaries will sit at home and will be vulnerable to all types of exploitation.
